The Sanctioned Long-Range Delivery of Intact Gourds.

A leaderboard measured in fractions of a mile, denominated entirely in pumpkins that survive the trip.

Once a year, in the flat farmland of Sussex County, Delaware, teams gathered to answer a question nobody strictly needs answered: how far can a pumpkin be made to travel while remaining, in the technical sense, a pumpkin.

The desk files Punkin Chunkin as the most heavily engineered governed throw on the ledger. Entries competed by class, air cannon, trebuchet, catapult, centrifugal, torsion, and human-powered, each division a separate market with its own physics and its own records.

One rule converts the spectacle into a throw rather than a demolition. The gourd must leave the machine whole and be recoverable whole; a pumpkin that bursts in the barrel is logged, in the sport's own vocabulary, as "pie," and the attempt is voided.

The record book favors compressed air. The team American Chunker posted a launch of 4,694 feet in 2013, very nearly nine-tenths of a mile, a distance that turns a ten-pound gourd into a briefly airborne asset with a real settlement risk on landing.

The pumpkin must arrive as it departed, whole, or the distance never posts.

The venture began small. In 1986 a handful of Delawareans settled a bar-side wager over who could throw a pumpkin farthest, and the dispute compounded, year over year, into a championship whose proceeds funded scholarships and local charity.

Then the market seized. A 2016 air-cannon accident injured a volunteer, and the resulting litigation and insurance exposure grounded the event, proof that a throw governed on the field can still be undone off it.

The desk reads the whole enterprise as a distance exchange. Records were the traded asset, illiquid and hard-won; the rules were the clearinghouse; and the intact gourd, improbably, was the unit of account.

Compliance verdict: A rigorously governed throw priced in surviving pumpkins and grounded by its own liabilities. The distances cleared, the gourds mostly held, and the championship, having flown further than anyone planned, came down hard.
