Philae And The Comet Landing That Bounced Twice.

A lander achieved the first soft touchdown on a comet, then declined to stay put on the first two attempts.

After a decade in transit aboard the Rosetta spacecraft, the European Space Agency's Philae lander was released toward the surface of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. The desk regards this as one of the most ambitious throws ever attempted: a payload aimed at a body only a few kilometers across, in gravity so faint that the concept of falling barely applies.

The anchoring system was the crux of the entire operation. Because the comet's gravity was almost negligible, Philae was designed to secure itself on contact using harpoons and screws, converting a gentle arrival into a fixed emplacement. In compliance terms, the plan was to issue its own ground-contact certificate the instant it touched down.

The harpoons did not fire. Deprived of anchoring, and with a cold-gas thruster meant to press it down also inactive, Philae did what any payload in near-zero gravity will do upon meeting a surface at speed. It bounced.

On a body this small, touching the ground and staying on it are entirely separate achievements.

The first rebound was substantial, carrying the lander back off the surface for a prolonged, slow arc before it settled again, only to bounce a second time. The desk notes that these were not failures of trajectory but failures of retention: the throw arrived correctly and then refused to conclude.

Philae finally came to rest in the shadow of a cliff or crater wall, tilted and poorly lit. This final resting place, starved of sunlight, limited the power available to its solar panels and cut short the surface operations, though the lander did return valuable data before falling silent.

The desk records the essential fact plainly: it was, nonetheless, the first soft landing on a comet in history. A payload that bounces twice and still delivers science has met the spirit of its contract, if not the letter of its anchoring plan.

Compliance verdict: A historic first touchdown undone in retention by an unmodeled anchoring contingency, producing two successive apex overshoots before a shadowed, provisional ground-contact certificate was finally issued. Governed descent, ungoverned landing. The lost sunlight is regretted; the achievement is not.
