Most entries in this archive concern objects thrown at the ground with no expectation of their cooperation. The Apollo 11 descent inverts the premise. Here the payload was crewed, self-aware, and actively negotiating its own trajectory in real time, which the desk regards as the highest and rarest class of throw.
The lunar module Eagle, carrying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, separated from the command module and began a powered descent toward the Sea of Tranquility.
