The Window-Assisted Descent of Prague Castle.

On May 23, 1618, a delegation of Bohemian Protestant nobles, dissatisfied with the conduct of Catholic imperial regents, resolved the dispute by throwing two of those regents and their secretary out a high window of Prague Castle. All three survived the fall. Legend, ever generous, credits a heap of dung in the moat below.

The desk finds this event instructive precisely because it involved live subjects rather than cargo, which raises the governance stakes considerably. A chest of tea cannot object to its trajectory. A regent can, and did, on the way down.

Consider the physics. A window of Prague Castle sits a meaningful distance above grade. Three human payloads, released in sequence, followed the expected arc. That every one of them walked away is the single most remarkable line in the entire file, and it is attributable to soft ground rather than to any planning on the part of the throwers.

We must be clear that the landing surface was not modeled. No thrower on record calculated the presence of the dung heap, or its depth, or its cushioning coefficient. The survival was, in our terminology, an unmodeled contingency that happened to favor the payloads. Forecasting does not get to claim credit for luck.

The Catholic side later attributed the survivals to divine intervention; the Protestant side, to the aforementioned heap. The desk takes no theological position. We note only that the outcome was fortunate for the individuals involved and catastrophic for the continent, which is an unusual pairing.

Because the throw doubled as a political rupture, its trajectory did not end at the moat. It continued, figuratively, through the Thirty Years' War, one of the longest and most destructive conflicts Europe had yet recorded. Few throws have converted so little vertical drop into so much downstream consequence.

Compliance verdict: Ungoverned force applied to live, unconsenting payloads with no landing surface modeled in advance. That all three parties received an informal ground-contact certificate, courtesy of the moat, does not retroactively authorize the launch. We log a Stage 0 defenestration with catastrophic apex overshoot measured in years rather than meters. Universally regretted, at length.
