Certifying Humanity's First Thrown Satellite.

Before 4 October 1957, every object humanity had thrown eventually came down. That evening, from the steppe at Tyuratam, the Soviet Union filed the first exception to the rule.
The projectile was modest: a polished aluminum sphere, fifty-eight centimeters across, weighing roughly eighty-four kilograms, trailing four whip antennas. An R-7 rocket — a repurposed intercontinental weapon — supplied the release energy. The Desk notes that the throwing arm was designed for a very different payload.
What distinguished the throw was not the object but the velocity. Sputnik 1 was released at a speed sufficient to keep missing the Earth as it fell, a maneuver the Desk files under "orbit" and grudgingly admires.
It circled once every ninety-six minutes and, crucially, it spoke. Two transmitters beeped on 20.005 and 40.002 megahertz, frequencies chosen so that amateurs worldwide could confirm the filing for themselves.
The beep was the receipt: proof that the throw had cleared the atmosphere and stayed up.
The batteries held for about three weeks. The satellite fell silent on 26 October and re-entered the atmosphere in early January 1958, at which point the throw formally concluded and gravity closed the case.
Chief designer Sergei Korolev, whose name went unpublished for years, is recorded by the Desk as release authority. The governance was absolute on the Soviet side and entirely absent everywhere else, which is precisely what alarmed everyone else.
"Sputnik" translates roughly as "fellow traveler," a companionable term for an object that induced institutional panic across an ocean and reorganized several national budgets overnight.
Compliance verdict: The first throw in recorded history to decline, however temporarily, to fall back. Ruled a governed release with global externalities. The Desk logs it as the opening entry in the orbital ledger.
