The Descent That Swung, And The Man Who Insisted On Testing It Himself.

On the twenty-second of October, 1797, over the Parc Monceau in Paris, André-Jacques Garnerin ascended by balloon to a considerable height, cut himself loose, and descended beneath a silk canopy without a rigid frame. It is the first recorded parachute descent from great altitude, and our desk files it with unusual respect.
Garnerin was, in the terminology of the compliance desk, both the operator and the payload. He elected to be thrown, by himself, from a height he had personally arranged. We do not encourage self-directed payloads, but we recognize the purity of the arrangement.
The canopy was frameless, which is to say it lacked the vent that later parachutists would add to steady the fall. The consequence was oscillation: Garnerin swung violently beneath his silk, side to side, in an arc that alarmed the crowd and, one imagines, the operator.
He swung like a pendulum that had not been told the experiment was already a success.
Our modeling desk classifies this swinging as an unmodeled contingency in the lateral plane. The vertical descent was, in the main, governed; it was the horizontal enthusiasm that no one had accounted for. Garnerin later reportedly suffered no worse than airsickness from the ordeal, and subsequent canopies were vented accordingly.
What matters, for our purposes, is that a human being fell from a great height on purpose and arrived at the ground alive. The parachute is the single most important instrument in our catalog: it is the device that converts a fall from a fatal event into a filed one.
Garnerin went on to make further descents, and his family continued the work, refining the canopy against exactly the oscillation that marked the debut. The first draft is permitted to swing. The certificate is issued to the descent, not to the elegance of it.
