On the twenty-fourth of July, 1946, a man named Bernard Lynch was deliberately ejected from a moving aircraft using a Martin-Baker ejection seat, and lived to describe it. It was the first live test of the mechanism on a person. Our desk files it as the founding case of the protective throw, the rare category in which the payload is thrown precisely so that it may survive.
